The Beaches of Martha’s
Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard is world famous for
its amazing shorelines which house no fewer than twenty
beaches. Each one has its own charm and history. Many
of Martha's Vineyard beaches are open to the public
while some are restricted to full time or summer
residents.
East Beach and Lighthouse Beach are
located in Edgartown. They are part of a breathtaking area
known as Cape Poge Wildlife Rescue on Chappaquiddick Island.
These beaches are some of the most popular on the Vineyard.
They are open to the public year round; there is a fee for
non-members from 5/30-10/15. Adults are $3, children 15 and
under are free.
Another popular shore destination is
Lobsterville Beach. It is in the town of Aquinnah on Vineyard
Sound. It is a favorite spot for anglers and also houses a
seagull nesting area. The beach is open to all but parking is
prohibited on Lobsterville Road.
The town of Chilmark has three
beaches. The first two, Lucy Vincent Beach and Squibnocket
Beach are only open to Chilmark residents. The third, Menemsha
Public Beach is open to the public. It boasts clear, bright
water typical of the island’s North Shore. It is found next to
Menemsha Harbor.
One important note, some of the public
beaches require permits for parking, admission, or both, so
remember to check with the local municipality (links to each
available in Menemsha.com's Important Contacts directory) when
making your plans. Then come see the sights and relax. The
beaches of the Vineyard are truly something to
behold.
Menemsha Public
Beach
Widely regarded as the
best spot on the Island for viewing spectacular sunsets,
Menemsha Public Beach is adjacent to Menemsha Harbor and
accessible off Basin Road.
